A Brief History of the Church

The Church of the Holy Name was organized in 1891. Charles Henry Joy gave the land for the church building. Shortly after he died, his widow, Marie Louise Joy, built the church as a memorial to her husband and to her father, Enoch Redington Mudge. The church was designed by Henry Vaughan, architect of the National Cathedral, and finished in 1893. Remick Hall was added in 1900. The Rectory adjoining the church was built in 1907. Barrett Hall was added on as an educational wing in 1957.

In its 107 years the church has had nine Rectors.

In April of 2001 we hosted the annual meeting of the Parish Historians Society. Our own parish historian Bob Torrey (pictured) hosted the event.

The picture below was taken during the keynote address.

Watch this space in the future as we add a time line of our history. We have a fascinating collection of photos and other memorabiia, dating back to the planning and opening of the church back in the 1890s!
